The Confession

Chapter 9 summary Noughts and Crosses.

Sephy manages to escape successfully but Callum can’t stop thinking about what Sephy has said about Andrew. He tries to persuade Jude and Morgan and gets persuaded. They don’t know how to tell the General as they have no evidence against him for his actions. No one would believe a second in command is a spy. Because of this Jude, Morgan and Callum decide to split up and meet again in six months time on the day of Callum’s birthday.

We find out that Sephy is pregnant but she tries hiding it. Minnie ends up finding out and so does her parents. They are horrified and they demand that she gets an abortion. Sephy refuses to and her father lashes out at her. The media end up finding out about her pregnancy and Callum hears it on the radio. He manages to get past Sephy’s heavily guarded house and they meet in the rose garden and they start to discuss baby names for their new baby.

Callum ends up getting caught by the police by her father and tells everyone that he kidnapped Sephy but she refuses to name him as one of her kidnappers. She confirms that Callum is the father of her baby.

The Hostage

Chapter 8 summary for Noughts and Crosses.

Sephy has gone to a boarding school called Chivers and it has given her a chance to develop as a person away from the family environment she was in while she was at Heathcroft. She had joined a group in school that helps to create peace and equality between the Noughts and Crosses. Sephy aspires to be a lawyer after she finishes school.

Callum’s life has also drastically changed. He is fully apart of the Liberation Militia and is in one the highest ranks. He has changed as a person, has killed and hurt many people. Callum has been separated from his family ( Jude and Meggie ) for at least 3 years. Jude suddenly comes back and tries to test Callum’s loyalty by planning the kidnapping of Sephy.

The kidnapping of Sephy is successful and Sephy has lost all trust in Callum because of the way it was all pulled off. Their main meeting point, the beach, after all these years of not seeing each other. Sephy recognises a familiar face from the Liberation Militia group of the man named Andrew Dom. On the day of the ransom drop, Pete is killed and Leila is arrested but Jude and Morgan elude the police.

Meanwhile, Callum had stayed back to keep an eye out for Sephy. They talk and end up making love to each other but is soon caught by Jude and he thinks that Callum had raped her which makes the brothers have a fight. Sephy escapes but Callum also helps her to get away from the area. Sephy tells Callum that Andrew Dom is a spy for her father and he is traitor that shouldn’t be trusted.

This Chapter is full of action and keeps you on edge the entire way through. We see the protagonists character and personality change drastically compared to what they started off from at the start of the book. Sephy and Callum’s relationship takes a lot of dips but they end up becoming stronger than ever.

The Breakdown and The Split

Chapter 4 and 5 summary Noughts and Crosses.

Chapter 4 of Noughts and Crosses was mostly based on Lynette and her past. Lynette and Jude get in a fight with each other in front of their dad as Callum walks in. Their mother was not their to control them which lead to Lynette getting injured from Jude. Their dad had no control over them whatsoever but did try his best to break them apart. Lynette and Jude’s argument was about how she doesn’t see herself as a Nought but rather a Cross. This infuriates Jude which makes him lash out towards her and assaults her. He explains that they’re letting Lynette live in a fantasy and no one has told her to snap out of it because she’s everyone’s favourite and Callum only cares about his “Dagger” friend Sephy. Callum also gets irritated and the two manage to have a fight. We soon learn what had happened to Lynette and her past and why she considers herself a Nought rather than a Cross. She had a Cross boyfriend and was beaten up by other Noughts because of it. She was hospitalised for the injuries and is still trying to recover from it. Sephy tries to throw a party and tries to invite Callum. Lynette commits suicide but everyone thinks it’s an accident. Lynette had been killed by a bus. We find out later in the book that she wrote a letter to Callum explaining why she did what she did and Callum hates her for it and calls her a coward.

Chapter 5 in Noughts and Crosses shows Sephy and Minnie’s Mother overdosing on alcohol and sleeping pills and is put in hospital. Sephy learns about her fathers past and when her mum gets better they take a day out to Dundale Shopping. Sephy asks Callum to come meet her so she doesn’t have to suffer alone. We then see Jude telling Callum to not going to the shopping mall and then Callum realises why he said that. He rushes to the shopping mall before the bomb goes off to save Sephy but up to 7 people had died in the bombing.

The Picnic

Chapter 3 summary

Callum and Sephy had spent the entire day together at Celebration Park. Sephy had lied to her mother about going with another rich Cross girl but got out of it and went with Callum instead. All was going well till they got onto the train where problems had risen. Two Cross train inspectors were interrogating Callum because of his skin colour ( being a Nought). They ask him questions that are irrelevant and Sephy sees this and defends Callum. She threatens the train inspectors by her last name “Hadley” ( as her dad’s going to be the future prime minister) and tells them if they don’t back off that she will make a formal complaint to her dad about both of them harassing her on a train. By this time the two inspectors leave Callum and Sephy alone and they continue their journey for their picnic.

This Chapter gives us a major insight on how Noughts can’t even travel properly without the Crosses thinking that they’re doing something Shady and not trusting them. They are considered to be thieves and just overall trouble makers. The stereotype around them causes them to isolation and rarely ever going to public places as it gives them a bad image or consequence in the end. Personally I think this chapter greatly conveys a global issue and a issue that still happens today around the world. It really shows the extent of stereotypes with certain races and not only educates us that stereotypes are wrong and racist thoughts but also the point of view of someone having to go through this.

The Turning

Chapter 2 and of Noughts and Crosses.

In Chapter 2 ‘The Turning’ continues from Callum and Sephy. We see Shania talking to Callum about how Sephy was beaten up in the girls bathroom and was taken home. We see Shania’s perspective of the entire situation from Sephy getting beaten up and her stunt of sitting with the Noughts during lunch time. Callum is shocked to hear what had happened with Sephy and runs to her house to visit her. He is then approached by Mrs Hadley (Sephy’s mother) who acts as if she doesn’t know Callum and gets him kicked out by Sarah her personal secretary. We then see Sephy’s point of view where she lays in bed suffering boredom while her sister comes in raging. She chucks a fit and asks who hit Sephy and tells her that no one messes with the Hadley’s. Sephy refuses to talk to her and Minerva walks out angrily. We also learn that not all Crosses completely hate the noughts. The perfect example is Mrs Paxton, Callum’s maths teacher. After we learn about Mrs Paxton, Callum and Sephy speak after a week as Sephy has returned from her recovery from being beaten up. Callum explains to Sephy about his attempts to visit Sephy during her recovery but Mrs Hadley ( Sephy’s mum) had kicked him out multiple times because of it. Mrs Hadley had blamed Callum for the way Sephy was treated because she sat with him on the lunch table. The two then meet up at the beach and reminisce about the past and how they went on a picnic to a festival.

This Chapter presents a lot of emotions from the characters and between the two characters. We learn that not all Crosses hate Noughts, how going against society can have numerous consequences resorting to violence and people getting injured. We also see the relationship change between Callum and Sephy. They have a deeper connection and care for each other but don’t usually show it to each other which leads them into questioning their friendship/relationship. My personal view on this is that the environment they’re surrounded in complicated everything they had and it’s irritating to see that two different races can’t accept each other and treat each other equally.

Callum and Sephy

Chapter 1 Summary

In Chapter 1 of Noughts and Crosses we are introduced to the main characters of this novel and it jumps straight into the conflict of the book, the differences between Noughts and Crosses ( White and Black community). It conveys the struggle of two best friends living in a society where they cannot interact with each other because of their race as one of them consider themselves superior than the other. It represents the conflict idea of man vs society and man vs self.

We see violence, riots and racist comments that we learn the meaning of later in the book and the key scenes includes these themes. A scene of where violence is presented is the riot/ protest of having Noughts (also called “Blankers”) introduced into HeathCroft High School. The Crosses start to throw objects towards them in order for them to leave the school forcefully. In the process a girl gets injured by getting hit on the head which is the first time we see a glimpse of violence in the book. We also witness Sephy threatened by girls in an older grade trying to “teach her a lesson” for her betrayal against the school’s Cross community by sitting with the Noughts. They push her around and tell her the consequences would be worse if she was to pull an act like that again. Sephy tells the older girls that she’s not scared and refuses to be intimated by them. This then leads to Sephy getting beaten up by them.

My personal point of the book so far that it’s an interesting twist to society as we mostly see a more White dominated community usually discriminating against the Black community and this book shows us a different perspective of the idea of a particular race being more superior. I think it’s a great way of illustrating the idea of discrimination through showing the struggles of two friends for the complete opposite backgrounds and how this could effect people in reality by negatively influencing people’s relationship.
